Monsoon is yet to hit the state, but heavy showers on Tuesday morning inundated the Comba subway, taking motorists, PWD as well as parents of school children off guard.
Given that the PWD has installed a water pump to pump out water flooding the subway, the pump was not switched on when the city was hit by heavy showers in the morning. As flood water in the subway rose considerably, making two-wheelers unmotorable, some of the parents were frantically trying to contact the South Goa District Collector, Anjali Sehrawat, demanding to know from authorities have put in in place a disaster management mechanism at the subway, which is prone to flooding during the
monsoon.
Fortunately, the rains subsided around noon as a result of which water inside the subway receded, giving sigh of relief to the motorists, including parents of school children.
A citizen Dixon Vaz bitterly lamented over the sorry state of affairs at the subway, demanding to know why the school children should suffer because of negligence of the authorities. Soon thereafter, senior PWD officials descended on the spot to take stock of the situation and directed the pump operator to man the pump as per their shifts without any compromise.
