MAPUSA
Barely two days after Deputy Collector refused to give permission to two groups to organise Narkasur contest at Mapusa, Swarajya Gomantak Sangathan and Shiv Sena on Monday came together to request the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) and the Deputy Collector to give them permission to organise All Goa Narkasur Effigy contest at Mapusa.
It may be recalled that on Saturday, Shiv Sena and Swarajya Gomantak Sangathan had applied for permission to organise Narkasur contest at the taxi-stand, Mapusa. The Deputy Collector rejected granting permission fearing law and order problem, as the Deputy Collector had received two applications to organise the contest on the same day and at the same spot.
Sources informed that Swaraj Gomantak Sangathan is a breakaway group of Shiv Sena and therefore authorities suspected that if one of the groups was given permission, the other group could create law and order problem at the event.
Two days after the permission was rejected by the authorities, Swarajya Gomantak Sangathan and Shiv Sena organised a joint meeting and decided to jointly organise the competition.
Speaking to media persons, Swarajya Gomantak Sangathan leader Manoj Walke said both the groups have come together to organise the Narkasur contest in the interest of the youth.
"For the last three years, Narkasur contest didn't take place in Mapusa and in the interest of energetic youth, Swarajya Gomantak Sangathan and Shiv Sena have decided to jointly organise the contest," said Walke.
Meanwhile, leaders of both the groups met MMC Chairperson Rohan Kavlekar and Deputy Collector Gaurish Sankhwalkar and submitted a memorandum demanding permission to organise the Narkasur contest.
Speaking to The Goan, Deputy Collector Shankhwalkar said Swarajya Gomantak Sangathan has submitted a memorandum stating that Shiv Sena don't have any problem to organise Narkasur contest.
"If police and traffic police give positive response to manage law and order and traffic situation, I will give permission for the contest tomorrow," he added.
