The Shiv Sena has demanded that Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar, who is also agriculture minister, should clarify his stand on “continuing politics” over the affairs of Sanjivani factory.
In a press note, Shiv Sena Vice-president and spokesman Rakhi Prabhudesai Naik said during the tenure of then agriculture minister Vijai Sardesai, decision had been taken to shift the factory from the ambit of the cooperation department to the agriculture department.
“Kavlekar has been active in Sanguem constituency shedding crocodile tears for farmers. It is high time that Kavlekar, without wasting any more time, should spell out his plans for the sugarcane farmers, who are solely dependent on this factory.”
“Though the State government has said it will revive the factory, a clear-cut statement should be made on the fate of the farmers.”
Prabhudesai claimed there are no irrigation facilities for sugarcane farmers due to which its cultivation is on the decline.
“What are the government’s plans to provide irrigation? Kavlekar has joined BJP with the claim that he wants to work for the people and bring in development. Does he mean that he wants to develop only Quepem constituency or also has intentions to work for the welfare of Sanguem people?”
“Also, we want to know what does he mean when he speaks about development. If it is about converting lands and bringing in huge buildings, then we will never allow it. But if he speaks of all inclusive development, even including farmers in it, then he should walk the talk. The farmers are waiting for Kavlekar to speak,” she added.
