The State government has set up a 22-member committee to frame guidelines for a ‘library policy’ as well as a way forward to preserve for posterity the private book collections of eminent personalitites.
Headed by academic Dr Nandakumar Kamat, the panel includes journalists, librarians and individuals working to inculcate the reading habit among students apart from serving bureaucrats. Sulaksha Kolmule, the librarian at the Central Library will be the member secretary of the committee. In addition, the committee will also come up with recommendations on the measures needed to be taken to promote the reading habit among the masses. The move to appoint the committee comes weeks after the government announced a scheme for disbursing maintenance grants as well as staff-salary grants for libraries set up by municipalities, panchayats and the two zilla panchayats.
