The Murgao Hindu Samaj (MHS) has decided that the Narakasur contest this year will not have judges and prizes will be distributed after a special committee goes through videos of all Narkasur effigies participating in the event.
This was stated by representatives of MHS, who along with committee members of Shri Mahalaxmi Pujanotsav Samiti (SMPS) addressed a news conference on Wednesday.
The media briefing was to release the itinerary during the upcoming Diwali festival in Vasco.
MHS has been organizing various entertainment programmes during Diwali along with Mahalaxmi Pujanotsav For the past several years.
Speaking to the media, MHS spokesperson and former Vasco mayor Shekar Khadapkar said the MHS decided not to have judges for the Narkasur contest this year, as there were always discrepancies after winners were selected for the Narkasur contest.
“Every year after the Narkasur contest, there is a controversy and everyone feels they deserved the first prize. This year, the Utsav Committee decided not to have judges but to have videography of the event and later appoint a 25-member committee who will screen the video footage and decide the winners,” said Khadapkar.
“We plan a lot of entertainment programmes and our Committee President Narayan Bandekar through his charitable trust has organised a musical programme ‘Sur Taal’ and I invite all people to attend this event. We will also stage a lot of Nataks, which include two Konkani Nataks,” said Khadapkar.
Speaking to the media, SMPS President Hemant Fadte appealed to people to witness various entertainment programmes held during the Diwali festival. “We will have the Narkasur contest on November 5 and an Akash Kandeel contest. We will also organise a procession of Mahalaxmi Pujanotsav, where the idol of Mahalaxmi will move thorough the city.”
