The Congress on Friday accused the BJP of using the Emergency of the mid 1970s as a ‘bogey’ to divert public attention from the government’s failure to deliver both, in Goa and at the Centre, and condemned their comparison of Indira Gandhi with the German dictator, Adolf Hitler.
“The BJP has nothing to show and is clutching at straws while drowning. The party is trying to lay its hands on anything it can to defame the Congress before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections,” former Union minister, Ramakant Khalap said.
Pointing to several failures of the government in delivering promises made, Khalap highlighted reports of the 50 per-cent rise in Indian deposits in Swiss banks. He said it indicates the failure of demonetisation, which the Centre had claimed would eliminate black money. He also cited the circulation of the surgical strike video as another gimmick of the BJP to regain their lost credibility.
Strongly condemning Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s comparison of Indira Gandhi to Hitler, Khalap said: “The only war Indira fought was the war against poverty. She elevated tens of millions of people from poverty. Hitler fought a war against Jews, and others who were helpless, and tortured them.”
Khalap also recalled Gandhi’s Green Revolution, her fight against Kalisthanis and her assassination to question her comparison with Hitler.
