The Computerised Railway Reservation Centre (CRRC), which opened with much fanfare to facilitate railway reservations to Canacona residents, has been reduced to a showpiece at Canacona Post Office.
There is no staff to operate the counter and sources have said the chances of operating the railway counter in the near future appear slim.
According to postal sources, the Canacona Post Office at Chaudi has been hit by acute manpower shortage, as it operates without a postmaster and each of the two staff presently working on the counters handles the postal services on their own.
“The postal staff who doubles up at the CRRC besides his normal postal services, was transferred 10 days ago and his replacement has not yet been sent to work in Canacona post office. We do not know when his replacement will be posted in Canacona,” said the source.
“Presently, we are taking up only work related to postal services. Besides, we do not have the CRRC password and other related authorisation to operate the railway reservation counter.”
“We also do not know how long the railway reservation services will not be available at the Canacona Post office," informed a source at the Canacona post office.
It may be recalled in order to provide facilities for passengers to book all-India Computerised reservation tickets, the Konkan Railway had launched the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) at the post offices located at Tivim, Karmali, Margao, CBO/Panaji and Canacona in Goa region.
The KRC Station at Chaudi which, prior to the Covid pandemic, used to issue tickets of the prescribed quota to trains making a brief halt at Canacona Railway Station, has no computerised ticketing system.
The Canacona KRC Station has also stopped the issue of fixed tickets for those trains which they were allotted but do not presently halt at Canacona.
