Concerns raised over logistics support to Margao civic body

MARGAO

When will the government fulfill its commitment to provide logistics support to the Margao Municipal Council to tide over the waste problem plaguing the commercial capital?

This question is doing the rounds of the civic body, with the city facing the worst ever garbage crisis, and the promised logistics support to tone up the collection and transportation of city waste is yet to come in till date.

Just consider this. After much delay, the office of the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) had given the sanction to procure two garbage trucks and as many trucks to the civic body. Officials in the know say these vehicles are crucial to the transportation of the city waste to Sonsodo, adding that any breakdown in the existing fleet of vehicles will only aggravate the acute situation.

That’s not all. The civic body has till date received around 500 waste bins from the GSUDA, which are being used by the waste collectors as well as to collect waste from the housing societies. The small bins for distribution to the thousands of households are yet to come to the civic body. The Margao municipality is moving ahead to implement the exercise not to accept waste from the households if handed over in plastic bags. How the civic body expects the households to supply the waste to the collectors in the absence of bins remains unknown.

After last month’s Sonsodo fire incident the Margao Municipal Council had knocked the doors of the authorities, including the DMA and the Solid Waste Management Corporation for bio-digesters and baling machines.

In fact, two baling machines were proposed by the civic body to bale tons of plastic dumped at the waste treatment plant. An official pointed out that unless the promised baling machines are made available to the civic body at the earliest, carting away the plastic to the factories in Karnataka may get further delayed.

Similar is the case with the bio-digesters. While the DMA along with officials of different agencies had inspected the wholesale and retail fish markets to explore the possibilities of installing bio-digesters so that waste generated in the markets are treated in the markets itself, the bio-digesters are yet to see the light of day.
