Governor Dr Mridula Sinha on Tuesday underlined the need to give women their rightful place in the society and called on the people to work towards reducing crimes against women.

She was speaking after unfurling the national flag at the 67th Republic Day function at Campal, Panaji.

Addressing the gathering, she said, “Our Constitution bestows equal rights on men and women in the country. But sadly, despite numerous social revolutions and laws and regulations, lot needs to be done to improve the condition of women which is big challenge our country is facing. We also need to stop the rising violence against women and girls for which a coordinated effort of people is inevitable.”

Lamenting that ancient philosophy like ayurveda has been underestimated by Indians, she said, “Rejuvenation of this ancient science is an important part of our public health policy. It is a matter of pride that we have succeeded in delivering acceptance to yoga worldwide.”

Applauding the government’s efforts to encourage agricultural activities in the State, she said, “Goa should begin to produce more and slowly reduce its dependency on other States so that prices will also become affordable.”

On the occasion, anganwadi workers Priti Gaonkar and Sneha Divkar were honoured.

The function was also attended by Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar, Craftsmen Training Minister Pandurang Dhavalikar, Leader of Opposition Pratapsingh Rane and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte, among others
