Cong, BJP workers engage in slogan shouting at Vasco

CODE VIOLATION

VASCO

The Congress party and BJP workers from Mormugao constituency were involved in slogan shouting activity while rival candidates had gone to file their nomination papers at Vasco on Tuesday.

Violating the 100-metre distance from the office of the returning officer, supporters of both the parties had gathered just outside the Mormugao Deputy Collector's office, which was hardly 25 metres.

Both groups initially remained calm when Congress candidate Sankalp Amonkar and BJP candidate Milind Naik from Mormugao constituency went to submit their nomination papers.

To show their strength, BJP supporters from Mormugao joined their Dabolim BJP supporters, while a large number of Congress supporters stood on one side of the MMC building and shouted in favour of the Congress candidate from Mormugao.

Congress supporters then started booing BJP candidate Naik as he emerged out of the office of the returning officer, after filing his nomination.

However, Naik silently slipped out with his supporters and proceeded to continue his campaigning activity. When mediapersons tried to get his reaction, Naik said he did not wish to comment on slogans by Congress workers.

“I have come to file my nomination papers to contest the assembly election and I am not interested in the nature of slogans by Congress workers,” said Naik.

As the police force was less, Vasco PI Nolasco Raposo along with other police inspectors from Mormugao and Verna tried to control the situation, but failed as the number of supporters outnumbered the police force.

As the news spread that Naik was booed outside the office of the returning officer at Vasco, Mormugao DySp Laurenco D’Souza rushed to the site and tried to disperse the crowd.
