MARGAO
Amidst the suspense over the party’s South Goa candidate, block presidents of the Congress party from South Goa have requested the Party High Command to nominate a new face for the South Goa Lok Sabha ticket.

The block presidents are reported to have made the demand at an interactive meeting called by party South Goa election coordinator, MLA Altone D’Costa on late Wednesday. Besides Altone, the meeting was also attended by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao.

The meeting of the block presidents was called by the South Goa district Congress chief Savio D’Silva at the request of the party district coordinator to take stock of the situation and chalk out the action plan how to go about in the ensuing polls.

During the interaction, some of the block presidents are believed to have called upon the party to give a new face as a candidate in the coming polls.

A resolution to this effect, sources said, will be sent to the Pradesh Congress Committee as well as the party High Command.

The decision by the block presidents assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting of the Congress scheduled in New Delhi on March 23.

The decision also assumes significance as it comes against the backdrop of the fact that four-time sitting MP Francisco Sardinha is amongst the three candidates, whose names were shortlisted by the Party Screening Committee and recommended to the CEC. The other two names are ex-PCC chief Girish Chodankar and Capt Viriato Fernandes.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, who addressed the meeting, urged the block presidents to gear up with just a few days to go for the May 7 Lok Sabha polls.

The meeting is believed to have discussed the election strategy, how to go about visiting the voters and mobilising them on voting day.
