The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) on Tuesday continued its tirade against the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant whose relative recently got admission into the MBBS degree programme at GMC under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota.
GPCC chief Girish Chodankar said that there was nothing wrong if Sawant’s relative Swaraj Satish Sawant had gotten admission to the GMC by following regular procedure.
However, Chodankar alleged that the manner in which Swaraj had gotten admission was unfair and the procedure had been tweaked in his favour.
“The Chief Minister as well as the Director of Technical Education has to come clear on what happened,” Chodankar said, addressing the press at the Congress headquarters.
“In the MBBS prospectus, the income limit for the EWS category was Rs 3 lakhs. On the day of admission i.e. July 4, an advertisement was published in three papers announcing the income limit for EWS as Rs 8 lakhs. There is no way students could have gone to get the EWS certificate on the same day, as it takes eight days to get the said certificate,” said Chodankar, stressing that Swaraj and some other students had produced the EWS certificate on the day itself.
“The CM and Director of Technical Education are not giving proper information, and the information is not shared equitably. If it was a fair process, then the advertisement announcing the raise in income limit should have been made public in advance, and everyone should have been made aware of it so that no one person with prior knowledge benefits,” Chodankar said.
The GPCC chief said that certain parents were taking up the matter legally, and that the party itself would launch a protest if the CM and DTE did not come clear about the issue at the earliest.
