Defending the Congress party’s performance at the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) polls, GPCC Vice President Sankalp Amonkar on Tuesday said the voter percentage had risen at the elections.

"I have been getting calls on the results of MMC polls and while we fielded nine candidates in Mormugao constituency, Shraddha Amonkar won in Ward 8 and Yogita Parsekar won in Ward 9,” said Amonkar while speaking to reporters.

“The way the people came out to vote indicated that our panel would win in at least 4-5 wards but sadly we lost two wards by a very small margin."

"We may have won only two wards and we may have lost a few more wards by a very small margin, but I am happy that the voter percentage for the Congress has increased in these civic polls.”

Amonkar claimed that at the MMC polls in 2015, the Congress-backed panel had won three wards and yet, its voter percentage was at around 32%.

“But this time around, we have won two wards but our voter percentage increased to 44%. We are glad that our voter percentage has increased in Mormugao constituency, especially since I have been fighting against a minister and there has been misuse of government machinery," said Amonkar.
