The Congress on Monday accused the Goa State Election Commission (SEC) of delaying the 2026 municipal elections through a “faulty and farcical” ward delimitation exercise.
Congress spokesperson and former Margao Municipal Council chairperson Savio Coutinho alleged that the BJP-led government was undermining local self-governance by continuing to run municipal bodies through administrators.
Coutinho said he had objected to the ward division, alleging that the notification lacked voter numbers, raising concerns over transparency and “ghost voters”. He claimed some wards had been created as disconnected areas to favour ruling-party candidates.
He also alleged that changes in ward numbering could manipulate reservations. Coutinho demanded a fresh notification with voter counts, geographical continuity and a redo of the delimitation.
