Concerned about the rise in crimes in Bardez and particularly in Assagao, Congress leaders called on the Anjuna Police and demanded that the miscreants be identified and arrested at the earliest.

The leaders also appealed to the police to increase patrolling in the village to instil a sense of confidence among the villagers.

“The recent chain snatching incidents reported in Assagao and Mapusa has made women vulnerable to such attacks. Many of our women are feeling unsafe and get scared to come out of the house,” said Chandan Mandrekar, Vice President of North Goa Congress District Committee.

The North Goa Congress District Committee, Vice President along with other Congressmen submitted a memorandum to Anjuna PI demanding swift action against the accused.

Congressman and social worker, Dattaram Pednekar stressed the need to increase police patrolling and demanded strict action against the culprits.

“The criminals are taking advantage of the pandemic by using masks and helmets to hide their identity. All of us particularly women walking on roads have to remain alert,” Pednekar said.

It may be recalled that two motorcycle-borne miscreants snatched a gold chain and a Mangalsutra worth Rs 3.50 lakh from two different women at Khorlim-Mapusa and Assagao on Wednesday last week.

Both the incidents happened along the Mapusa-Assagao route within a period of two hours and in both cases, the rider was wearing a helmet, while the pillion rider, a mask.

Congress leader Parvati Nagvekar related an incident of how two unknown youths snatched her purse while she was walking along a road.

“I later learnt that three other cases of similar nature were reported in the same area. We have demanded that the culprits may be identified at the earliest and strict action taken against them,” Nagvekar said.

Anjuna PI Suraj Gawas has assured the delegation that all efforts will be made to nab the accused involved in the chain snatching and other cases.

He has also said that the frequency of patrolling has been increased in the village.
