Cong faces challenge in declaring candidates for Benaulim and Curtorim

MARGAO
With the Congress delaying in unveiling the list of candidates in party stronghold Salcete, Opposition Leader Digambar Kamat has conceded that the central party leadership is facing a challenging job to finalize the candidates for the constituencies of Benaulim and Curtorim.

Of the eight seats at stake in Salcete, the Congress has declared candidates for Margao, Navelim and Cuncolim seats and has left the Fatorda seat for the regional outfit Goa Forward. The party, however, is yet to unveil candidates for the crucial seats of Curtorim and Benaulim.

When asked to comment on the delay in announcing candidates for the seats in Salcete,

Kamat shot back saying the Congress high command deals with the tickets for the candidates. “The party goes by a process. If there are 2-3 names, the Pradesh Election Committee sends the names to the Central Election Committee and it finalizes the candidates after a survey,” he said.

Saying that no party leader can assure tickets to anybody, Kamat said if anyone is given the assurance, it would amount to a wrong one.

On Salcete, he agreed there are too many candidates vying for the tickets in the four seats of Benaulim and Curtorim. “There are too many people who have staked claim for the tickets. This is a good sign for the Congress party,” he said, while adding that the Central election committee is facing the challenging task of finalizing the candidates.
