The Congress leadership finds itself in a spot over the question of expelling its 10 former MLAs led by the then Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Chandrakant Babu Kavlekar at a time when a disqualification is hanging over them before the Goa Assembly Speaker.
It’s now a little over two months since the 10 MLAs had formed a two-third majority to leave the party and join the BJP on July 10.
While the Congress District Committee, South, had mulled expulsion of the MLAs and the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) resolving that they should never be taken back, the expulsion of the MLAs from the party still remains undecided.
Members of the Congress district committees, who had called on party leaders in Delhi last month, had returned saying the AICC leadership will expel the 10 MLAs no sooner a resolution is forwarded by the PCC Executive.
GPCC Chief Girish Chodankar, who is presently in Delhi in connection with the meeting of state PCC presidents and AICC general secretaries, is believed to have taken up the issue with the party central leaders, who have agreed to examine the legal issues concerning the defectors.
When The Goan called up the GPCC Chief to shed light on the expulsion of the MLAs from the party, Girish said the issue is being examined legally by the AICC legal cell.
Meanwhile, sources in the know pointed out that the GPCC Chief is believed to have forcefully demanded before the party central leadership that all the 10 MLAs who have quit the party to embrace the BJP should not be taken back in future.
The stand adopted by the GPCC Chief assumes significance with reports doing the rounds stating that a couple of Congress-turned-BJP MLAs have told their supporters they will return to the Congress before Assembly polls.
