Suspecting foul play in the death of the teenaged girl, the Congress on Friday questioned the hurry to dispose of the body, as the girl had died in mysterious circumstances and several questions in the incident remain unanswered.
The Congress said that despite the much-publicized surveillance by the police, it was shocking to understand that the men-in-uniform failed to find out how the girl reached Calangute even after 48 hours of the incident.
They further said due to the recent spate of rapes and murders reported in the State, in this case too rape and murder could not be ruled out.
“The government is failing in keeping Goa safe and its negligence is making society unsafe for women and minors. Under CM Pramod Sawant the law and order has completely collapsed. We need Goa to be safe and crime-free where women are safe all the time,” said Vivek D’Silva, President of North Goa Youth Congress.
A large group of North Goa Youth Congress along with senior Congress leaders marched to the Calangute Police Station to protest against the “collapse of law and order situation” in Goa and demanded justice to the teenaged girl who died under suspicious circumstances.
The protesters questioned the police for the hurry in disposing of the body and in the process destroying evidence.
They said first the post-mortem was distorted and now with the cremation the evidence was gone. The body should have been there till the investigation is complete. The body is destroyed, how will the investigation continue?” they questioned.
D’Silva said that Goa was under curfew for the past two months yet the number of rape and murder cases were up.
“Even when the curfew is on and not many people are moving out of their homes and when not many clubs and hotels are functioning, why are so many criminal cases reported in the State?” he asked.
Several Congress leaders including Goa Mahila Congress President Beena Naik, GPCC General Secretary, Agnel Fernandes, Congress leader Joseph Sequeira and other leaders were very vocal questioning the police action in the case.
Bardez Deputy Collector Sneha Gitte (IAS) and DySP Edwin Colaco were seen trying to persuade the agitators that investigation will be carried out and justice will be done to the girl and her family.
Deputy Collector Sneha Gitte assured the protesters that the case was being thoroughly investigated and every possible angle will be looked into.
“The inquiry will be fair, objective and will be completed as soon as possible. Every angle will be investigated and no pressure will be allowed and the girl and Goa will get justice,” Gitte said.
The Congress in its memorandum demanded a thorough investigation in the case and the guilty be brought to book within seven days, failing which the youth Congress will come on the street to get justice for the teenaged girl.
