Benaulim constituency was back again in the news during the weekend – this time after the Congress has finally decided to open the party doors for youth leader Warren Alemao, the cousin brother of Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao and nephew of former Chief Minister Churchill Alemao.
Incidentally, on a day when news spread about Warren’s induction into the Congress party, members of the Benaulim block Congress Committee went into a huddle on Saturday to discuss amongst other things, the prevailing political situation in the constituency.
The Goan understands that the Benaulim block Congress committee was not consulted over party’s move to induct Warren into the Congress fold. Sources informed that the Benaulim block Congress president Keith Gracias was only intimated of the party’s induction programme at the Congress House on October 27.
Take note, the Benaulim Block Congress has already proposed the name of three probable candidates for the Benaulim seat to the party leadership, including the name of Benaulim Zilla panchayat member Suzie Rodrigues, Solan Furtado and Poly Lobo.
A member of the Benaulim Block Congress committee informed that the Block was not kept in the loop over Warren’s induction in the party. “When the party had recently inducted new members, including social activist Santan Pereira, the block was consulted on the move. This time, the party leadership has only intimated of the induction programme of Warren Alemao. There were no consultations with the block”, the member informed.
Congress party’s move to finally open the doors for him should come as a booster for Warren Alemao since he has filed his application to join the party several months ago. Warren has made his presence felt across the constituency over the last 2-3 years, taking up several developmental works, with an eye on the 2027 Assembly election.
That the Congress party was in the process of inducting him in the party became apparent over a month ago when he was invited at the Congress House. Since then, he joined Congress’ Goy Rakhon Yatra with a huge band of supporters and well wishers when the yatra rolled in Benaulim earlier this month. Warren was also seen with his supporters at the concluding programme of the Goy Rakhon yatra which was attended by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at the MCC ground, Margao last Sunday.
After the Congress party gave the green signal for his induction, Warren immediately took to the social media inviting his supporters to join me for his official induction into the Congress party. “This marks the beginning of a new chapter in my public journey, rooted in the values of unity, service and commitment to the people of Goa. Your presence and blessings will make this occasion truly special as I take this step forward”, he said.
Warren’s induction into the Congress is scheduled on October 27 at 11.30 am at the Congress House, Panaji
