In a change from its usual moves, the Congress on Tuesday asked the allies of the Parrikar-led government to take a conscientious call in the interest of Goa and Goans, and desert the BJP.
Pointing out that the BJP has not come clean about Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s health statement for eight months now, Congress spokesperson Adv Yatish Naik said that even though the Chief Minister’s staff has been continuously saying he’s improving, the fact remains that the CM is missing from his chair.
“Our government is headless,” said Adv Naik.
“No one knows the health status of the CM. From food poisoning in February, we are now told he’s suffering from a pancreatic ailment. The fact is we currently do not have a functional CM. It is time the allies took a conscientious call in the interest of Goans,” he added.
Adv Naik also said that while the state has repeatedly seen Manohar Parrikar in and out of hospitals over the last few months, he is barely seen in the Secretariat, from where the Chief Minister is supposed to work.
Calling the government a “gross failure”, Naik also referred to the in-fighting within the BJP, with MLAs crossing swords, ministers crossing swords, and there being a general chaos in the ruling side.
“The BJP can’t even decide who is Number 2, or who is fit to be an acting CM in Parrikar’s absence,” said the spokesperson.
It is due to this that the Congress gave a call to the allies to take a step back as Goa needs a “secular, performing and progressive” government.
This call from the party comes after several unsuccessful meetings with the Governor, who has been indifferent towards the party’s cries to let them form the government, as is their right.
The call also comes after two of the party’s MLAs resigned from their seats in the Legislative Assembly, and joined the BJP a week ago.
Naik expressed confidence that the Congress would win both the Mandrem and the Shiroda seats in the upcoming by-election to be held in the next six months in the wake of Dayanand Sopte (Mandrem) and Sunhash Shirodkar (Shiroda) stepping down to join the BJP.
“We have the capability
of winning both the seats,” said Naik. “And we will,”
he promised.
