With examinations postponed indefinitely and no academic work at hand, the Congress on Friday demanded that teachers should be exempt from having to report to schools.
“In view of the grave situation we are in with regards to the pandemic of the coronavirus, the government along with the Education dept should take a decision and exempt teachers from working,” a statement issued by Congress spokesperson Trajan D’Mello said.
Since classes and exams are cancelled there should be other arrangements made for teachers to complete their work including online submission of assessments, he said.”Teachers also have families which may comprise of young children and elderly. Every time they step out of their homes there is a risk. Even though authorities claim that there is no community transmission in India, we shouldn’t wait for a disaster.
“After what has happened in Europe and the rest of the world, we in India still have a chance to contain this virus. But for that to happen strict measures have to be taken immediately,” D’Mello said, adding that various alternative options should also be considered for other government employees to work from isolated places or online.
D’Mello also demanded that safety and other precautionary measures must be put in place for all its staff whose presence on duty are necessary.
