The Mormugao BJP Block slammed the opposition over panic among people in Mormugao on Thursday and said unity is needed in the fight against the dreaded coronavirus.

Mormugao BJP Block President Sanjay Satardekar criticised Congress leader Sankalp Amonkar for addressing a news conference at Panaji about an issue prevalent in Mormugao.

“Amonkar should have not done politics at this time when there is enough panic and fear among people with regards to the COVID-19 pandemic. I appeal to the opposition that in such times, they must not indulge in politics and not create panic but instead join hands to fight the coronavirus issue as humans.”

MMC Councillor Leo Rodrigues said Amonkar need not have addressed the news conference especially since their senior leader and Opposition Leader Digambar Kamat had already tweeted that there was no such flight bringing any affected passengers from Iran to the Dabolim airport.

“Despite clarification by his own leader, Amonkar claimed our MLA and Urban Development Minister Milind Naik was not bothered about the people. But the fact is, Milind Naik had met the dy collector and spoke to the collector and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on the issue,” said Rodrigues.

“Coronavirus is now a pandemic and this is not the time for politics. Amonkar should not have made this a political issue and should, instead, think on how we can fight the disease instead of unnecessarily creating panic,” Rodrigues added.
