MARGAO
Congress workers took the platform of the programme held to commemorate the death anniversary of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on Monday to insist that the party leadership immediately announce and project the candidate for the South Goa Lok Sabha seat.
Speaking at the programme organised by the Congress after paying tributes to the two leaders, some of the party block leaders pointed out that it lost many a seat in the 2022 Assembly polls because of the late announcement of the candidates.
They said the late declaration of the candidates affected the campaign of many a candidate, leaving them no time to move around the constituencies.
Saying the party leadership should learn a lesson or two from the 2022 Assembly elections, the workers demanded that Congress should announce the candidate for the South Goa Lok Saba seat without delay.
“If the candidate for the Lok Sabha seat is announced months before the election, it helps the workers to take the candidate to the nook and corners of the constituency,” a worker stated.
Addressing the gathering, Congress South Goa district chief Savio D’Silva assured the workers their sentiments will be conveyed to the party leadership for action.
Referring to the exit of the eight party MLAs into the BJP, Savio said the Congress workers should take up the challenge to strengthen the party at the grassroots level. “We have to go the people, sit with them and understand their difficulties,” he said while showering praises on Nuvem block president Manuel D’Costa for standing by the party despite MLA Aleixo Sequeira switching sides to join the BJP.
