MARGAO
Hours before the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) and the Margao Municipal Council kick-started an awareness on waste segregation at the source in Madel, fire engulfed the garbage mound near the KTC bus stand after midnight.
A Margao fire tender rushed to the site after receiving a call at around 1.20 am on Monday that fire has engulfed the waste mound, creating a scare since it is located close to the bus stand, which plays host to buses.
It took close to an hour for the firemen to bring the blaze under control, informed Margao fire officer Gill D’Souza.
The fire brigade again rushed to the site at around 9 am after the fire resurfaced at the mound. The fire officer pointed out that the fire may reoccur at the site again unless the mound is capped with mud.
The Margao Municipal Council has been dumping waste near the KTC bus stand since the time Sonsodo had turned saturated.
This is not the first time that fire has engulfed the waste mound near the bus stand, only reminding the powers that be of the danger posed by the mound to the buses parked at the adjoining bus stand.
