Congress claims revival as ZP tally rises to 10

PANAJI

The Indian National Congress on Monday said it was encouraged by its improved performance in the 2025 Zilla Panchayat (ZP) elections in Goa, stating that the results show growing public dissatisfaction with the BJP-led State government.

In a statement, AICC in-charge for Goa Manikrao Thakare said the Congress increased its ZP tally from four seats in 2020 to ten seats this year, even as counting was still in progress. He said the party performed better, especially in South Goa, and claimed this showed a gradual revival of the Congress at the grassroots level.

Thakare said the ZP results indicate that people are losing faith in the BJP government due to its failures. He added that the performance followed the Congress victory in the South Goa Lok Sabha seat in 2024.

The Congress accused the BJP government of poor administration, corruption and ignoring key issues such as unemployment, environmental damage, rising prices and weak infrastructure. According to the party, the results reflect voter fatigue with what it described as unfulfilled promises and divisive politics.

Thakare said the party’s showing in the rural polls highlighted its focus on local governance, inclusive growth, sustainable tourism and strengthening panchayati raj institutions.

He said the party was confident this momentum would continue into the 2027 Goa Assembly elections.

He also thanked voters, party leaders and workers, including GPCC president Amit Patkar, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, MPs and MLAs, for their efforts during the elections.
