Congress demands repair of Siolim road within a month

Highlighting the pathetic condition of the Siolim-Marna road, the Congress on Friday demanded immediate fixing of the road stretch within one month or face public protest.

The Siolim-Marna stretch of almost 6 km has been peppered with potholes during the monsoon, making the road treacherous for motorists, particularly the two-wheeler riders. Several mishaps have taken place along the stretch due to the dangerous condition of the road.

The water resources department had taken up work on laying a water pipeline along the road last year but failed to complete the work.

This is the second monsoon that people/motorists have had to face a harrowing time negotiating the road.

The Goan had highlighted the miserable condition of the road just before the monsoon even as authorities had predicted that they would complete the road before the arrival of monsoon.

North Goa District Congress Vice President Chandan Mandrekar in a memorandum has requested the PWD Executive Engineer to take up the repair of two roads on priority “ Siolim to Marna and Assagao to Siolim.

He said the condition of both the roads were bad and were unsafe for motorists to use.

“The road conditions are so pathetic that one of my friends while travelling on one of the roads fell off his two-wheeler along with his little daughter and sustained injuries,” Mandrekar said.

He urged the PWD to fix the road within one month or face protest after a month.

Siolim Congress Block President Rajan Ghate said the government has failed to attend to the road for the last four years.

“The engineers go on giving dates while the local Goa Forward MLA seems to be oblivious of the problems faced by the public,” Ghate said.

Former Siolim-Sodiem sarpanch, Francis Fernandes called upon the department to take up the road work on top priority.

Congress leaders, Dattaram Pednekar, Bolanath Ghadi and others also spoke.
