As part of its nation-wide protest, the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee on Friday staged a dharna outside the CBI office at Bambolim to protest against the Centre’s move to divest CBI director Alok Verma of his powers and send him on leave.
Keeping in tune with its national president Rahul Gandhi’s march in New Delhi to raise the heat against the Mod government, the Congress in Goa demanded immediate restoration of the CBI chief as well as apologies from the PM to the nation for trying to destroy premier institutions.
Carrying banners that read “Reinstate CBI Director”, the Congress protestors were led by Leader of the Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, St Andre MLA Francis Silveira, Tivim MLA Nilkanth Halarnkar, Cuncolim MLA Cleofacio Dias, GPCC President Girish Chodankar, Mahila Congress president Pratima Coutinho and vice-president Beena Naik, amongst others.
The Congress demonstration was met with police resistance. The entire controversy erupted earlier this week when CBI director Alok Verma and special director Rakesh Asthana were sent on leave following an internal fight between the two over allegations of corruption and misuse of office.
