Congress turned the concluding leg of the ninth day of its Goy Rakhonn Yatra into a political pitch in Tivim, accusing the ruling establishment of compromising Goa’s land, resources and employment opportunities while benefiting private interests.
The padyatra, which began at the Assonora Kadamba bus stand after tributes were paid at the Bala Raya Mapari Memorial, culminated near the Tivim football ground at around 6 pm, with Congress leaders using the gathering to call for a change in government.
Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao alleged that political power was being used to facilitate land transfers to private universities, indiscriminate mining and the destruction of Goa’s natural resources.
GPCC president Girish Chodankar accused the Sawant-Rane government of the “loot of Goa” and said the people must reject what he described as “broker politics”.
Former deputy chief minister Dayanand Narvekar said politicians had shifted from development-oriented politics to real-estate interests.
South Goa MP and Tivim native Captain Viriato Fernandes described the Goy Rakhonn Yatra as a movement belonging to every Goan and urged people to participate in the campaign against government policies.
Fernandes also targeted the proposed private universities, claiming they could eventually affect access to education for poorer sections.
The ninth day was dedicated to “Nari Shakti”, with Congress highlighting the role of women in protecting Goa’s identity and culture.
