Admitting that a weak structural setup of the party in Mapusa has led to a Congress debacle in the past, the newly appointed Mapusa Congress Block President, Shashank Narvekar on Monday said all past and new party workers, and a robust organisation will ensure that Congress opens its account in the constituency.
Narvekar also blamed the BJP for the miserable condition of the town and stressed the need for residents of Mapusa to come together and elect a new candidate in the constituency.
“Congress had a close call in several elections in Mapusa. The structural constitution like the booth level setup may have been weak. The other reason could be because the winning candidate was backed by most of the councillors. But this will change, and we will ensure that this time around a Congress candidate wins from Mapusa,” Narvekar said.
The Mapsua block president was addressing the media in presence of the former chairperson and councilor Sudhir Kandolkar, Mapusa block mahila president Pratiksha Khalap and Mapusa block youth president Himanshu Tivrekar.
Continuing, Narvekar said a BJP MLA has been presiding on the fate for Mapusa for the last 25 to 30 years backed by the elected council for the last 15 to 20 years at a stretch but the constituency has seen no progress whatsoever.
“Today, Mapusa is in a pitiable state only because a Congress MLA has never been elected in the constituency. So far, we have only heard of big announcements but no projects worth its salt have come up,” he said.
He said a Congress workers meeting of Mapusa block will be held on Tuesday at Bodgeshwar hall in Mapusa which will be attended by senior Congress leader P Chidambaram and Goa desk in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao.
According to Narvekar, Congress was working to build up the internal structure of the party in Mapusa to make it strong at the grass-root level.
“The team will be made up of young and experienced members. The structure that we are establishing from booth level to block level will work for the next 20 to 30 years,” he said.
Senior councillor Sudhir Kandolkar said with the constitution of the new block, there was enthusiasm within the party and people were approaching the party.
“It’s a good sign. The booth and block level workers should work hard to help the people. The committees should not be only for election but also to hear people’s grievances,” Kandolkar said.
The party has appointed a seven-member advisory committee comprising Subhash Narveker, Shashikant Kandolkar, Gurudas Natekar, Armindo Braganza, Michael Carrasco, Ravindra Fogueri and Naresh Tivrekar.
