The Penha de Franca and Salvador do Mundo panchayats have decided to impose a “containment red zone” in their respective villages till May 9, in view of a surge in Covid cases cases in Porvorim constituency

Defending the decision to have a 9-day containment red zone for the entire village, Salvador do Mundo Sarpanch Sandeep Salgaonker said Porvorim constituency has become a hotspot of Covid and cases have been rising sharply.
“There were 1,347 active Covid cases recorded by the Porvorim Primary Health Centre as on May 1. Some residents, both young and old, from the village have died due to the Covid and hence, the panchayat has decided to impose the containment red zone from May 1 to May 9 to break the chain of coronavirus,” said Salgaonkar.
“We have informed this to the deputy collector and Porvorim Police. We have received a good response from the business community regarding our extended lockdown.”
PENHA DE FRANCA
Close on the heels of the Salvador do Mundo panchayat, the village panchayat of Penha de Franca has also decided to impose a containment red zone in the village from May 2 to May 9.
The Penha de Franca panchayat has issued a press note informing the business community about the containment red zone and has appealed to all shops and establishments to cooperate with the panchayat.
RESTRICTIONS
The panchayat has allowed certain business activities with restrictions.
Shops dealing in essential commodities like groceries, vegetables, fruits, dairy milk, bread, hardware, super markets, meat products like fish and pet food shops are allowed to operate from 6 am to 11 am.
Religious marriage ceremonies will be allowed only at religious places subject to permission from the deputy collector. Ongoing house repairs will be allowed with a maximum of 4 workers.
Banks will be allowed to attend to customers only till 11 am, after which the bank staff can continue operations. Postal services will be allowed to cater to people till 11 am, after which only Postal staff can continue to work.
PERMITTED
Transport vehicles with essential supplies of good and commodities will be allowed to move in the village.
Essential services like gas agencies, hospitals, diagnostic centres, clinics, vaccination centres, pharmacies, veterinary services, animal care shelters and health services, will be allowed with restricted timings.
Restaurant kitchens enrolled with Swiggy, Zomato and other home delivery services, as well as courier services/Amazon/Flipkart and other such services will be permitted.
Security Agencies and companies will be allowed to operate beyond restricted timings, while residents working in government, semi government and private industries/firms will be allowed to enter and exit the village only on providing valid employment papers or ID.
Hotels which have guests and basic maintenance staff will be allowed but no fresh bookings can be accepted.
Pre-monsoon works or urgent development works by the government or panchayat will be permitted.
PROHIBITED
The panchayat has prohibited the a number of activities in the village. They include hair cutting saloons, spa, massage parlours, gym, tattoo centre, garments store, dry fruit vendors, beauty parlours etc.
Celebration/party halls, public buses, bars, restaurants and fishing jetty, swimming pools, play ground and sports ground, shooting for films, series and advertisements, gardens, parks, playing ground, open spaces and all private coaching classes or classes involving more than four people have also been prohibited.
MLA hails decision of 2 VPs
PORVORIM: Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte has welcomed the decisions by the Penha de Franca and Salvador do Mundo panchayats to have the containment red zone till May 9, claiming that lives are as precious as the economy.
“I had already requested Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to go in for a 15-days lockdown to break the chain of corona infection. The panchayats of Penha de Franca and the Salvador do Mundo have taken the right decision in imposing the containment red zone in their villages to curtail the spread of Covid,” said Khaunte.
