Contractor still collecting Sopo: Shadow Council

MARGAO

The Shadow Council for Margao has alleged that the Sopo Contractor continues to collect the daily sopo unabated, as none of the officials in the Margao Municipal Council have any clue about the decision taken by the Council at its meeting held on March 24.

SCM Convener Savio Coutinho informed that he had applied under the RTI act, for the copy of the Council meeting minutes held on March 24. He, however, said he was informed that till today, the Council minutes/resolution are not yet prepared by the Chairperson Lyndon Pereira.

In the absence of the minutes, the collection of Sopo fees by the Contractor is a fraud by itself, he said, while expressing shock that even the DMA's office has failed to act inspite of being notified about the same.

“This is a clear cut conspiracy to bestow the contractor the benefits of raking a fortune during the peak season and subsequently leave the Council to fend for themselves during the Monsoon offseason,” he added.

He warned that any losses to the Municipal treasury would be viewed seriously and appropriate forums shall be approached to penalise those responsible for the Council losing on revenue.
