The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) Goa deported two foreign nationals from Thailand and Uganda after they were found overstaying in India on tourist visas. Another Kenyan national has been lodged at the detention centre in Mapusa pending deportation.
Officials told The Goan that the Thai and Ugandan nationals, who had entered India on tourist visas on different dates, were found to have overstayed their permitted period of stay. They were deported to their respective countries on Thursday night. The Thai national was also convicted for overstaying.
Meanwhile, a Kenyan national who had entered India on a tourist visa was also found to have overstayed. After being convicted, she was lodged at the detention centre on Thursday evening and is awaiting deportation.
With the latest action, the FRRO has deported five overstaying foreign nationals so far this month. Officials said more such deportations are expected in the coming days.
Last month, six foreigners were deported, including three Russian nationals and one each from Belarus, Tanzania and Bangladesh.
So far this year, the FRRO has deported or facilitated the exit of more than 55 foreign nationals from Goa.
Nearly 20 foreigners have been arrested in Goa over the past two months for allegedly violating immigration norms. Those arrested hail from Thailand, Russia, Iran, Uganda, Japan, Austria, Nigeria and Kenya. In some cases, the alleged overstays had continued for years, with several of the foreign nationals found staying in the coastal belt.
