Cooperation Minister Subhash Shirodkar on Friday made an impassioned plea to societies including the Goa Marketing Board and the Adarsh Krishi Society, Quepem to venture into exports of food items.
In fact, Shirodkar said that items such as cashew, coconuts, besides boiled rice, which have huge demand abroad, can be taken up for export by these cooperative societies.
Speaking after launching Adarsh Krishi Society’s Auto Care Centre at the Marketing Board’s premises on Friday, the Cooperation Minister said since the Marketing Board and the Adarsh Krishi Society have been involved in the procurement of food items, they should venture out into exports of the locally available products. “A kilogram of boiled rice is priced around Rs 80 in the local market. The same rice commands Rs 250-300 in the European market,” he said.
Saying that the export of food items will not only give additional revenue to these cooperative societies, Shirodkar further said it will help give remunerative income to the farmers and help bring fallow fields back to cultivation.
The Minister took the platform to shower praises on the Chairman of the Adarsh Krishi society Prakash Velip for his service in the cooperative movement.
