MARGAO

The otherwise total and peaceful Janata curfew on Sunday was marred by an ugly incident when a police officer was caught on camera thrashing a two-wheeler rider at Rumdamol Housing Board in the jurisdiction of Maina Curtorim police station.

As the incident went viral, leaving the district top brass of the Goa police red-faced, Superintendent of Police, South Arvind Gawas got PSI Tejaskumar Naik withdrawn from duty and ordered an inquiry.

The incident is believed to have occurred at the Rumdamol Housing Board on Sunday morning when the police were patrolling the area. The video that went viral shows the PSI thrashing the two-wheeler rider, wearing a helmet, with his lathi. The PSI ignored the plea made by the rider to spare him, even as his two-wheeler fell down as the thrashing continued.

As the incident went viral and the police receiving brickbats on social media, SP Gawas clarified that the concerned police official involved in the incident has been withdrawn from the duty immediately and attached to the reserve line. SP Gawas further added that an inquiry has been ordered into the

incident. DySP Serafino Dias is conducting the probe.

DySP Serafino Dias told the media on Sunday that the two-wheeler rider in question was found riding on the roads despite being asked to stay indoors. He further said the police also had to repeatedly ask some boys in the housing board playing on the ground to stay indoors.

Earlier, Congress MLA Reginaldo Lourenco called up the district police chief and demanded an inquiry into the incident.
