CANACONA
In yet another incident, a Telangana-registered private car was stopped after it was found with a ‘police’ sticker in Canacona taluka.
While a strong police force were regulating highway traffic flow at the Monday’s fatal accident site at Maxem slope, a Telangana-registered car displaying a ‘Police’ sticker was ordered to stop.
When police questioned the car occupants in the presence of media persons, the driver and front passenger pointed towards rear seat and said a policeman was seated in the car.
A man then alighted from the rear seat and displayed his police identity of Telangana State, and claimed it was not an offence to have a ‘police’ sticker on a private car in Telangana.
He claimed that he was unaware of rules in Goa, but when confronted by media persons that courts have banned the use of ‘police’ name on private cars, the Telangana policeman said he was unaware and went on to remove the signboard.
The all-male occupants in the car who had come on a holiday to Goa were then allowed to proceed on their journey.
Incidentally, questions were raised as to how the private car displaying a ‘police’ signboard had managed to cross the Polem check post, when strict police surveillance is in force in view of the election code of conduct for the Lok Sabha polls.
Interestingly, the police checkpost is also manned by one team of Canacona police, while the another police team stopped the car, about 7 kms inside the State’s border.
Earlier on March 29, a Telangana-registered private car was stopped at the Polem check post after it was found with a ‘police’ sticker. The youth in the car were later made to remove the sticker before being allowed to enter Goa.
