Barely days after throwing open the Porvorim Elevated Corridor to traffic, the government has begun reworking the traffic arrangement, barring two-wheelers from the six-lane corridor and shutting all entry and exit points towards the Atal Setu side.
The restrictions, notified on Sunday by PWD Executive Engineer (NH) Gajanan Desai, will remain in force until further orders as authorities assess whether the newly commissioned corridor is delivering the intended traffic relief.
Under the notification, two-wheelers will be diverted to the service roads below the elevated corridor. Access points towards Atal Setu will also remain closed, except those specifically permitted for emergency or essential services.
The government had indicated that traffic restrictions could be introduced after studying the movement of vehicles following the corridor's opening.
Traffic authorities have now been tasked with recording traffic volumes, travel times, queue lengths, congestion and diversion patterns on the corridor and adjoining roads.
The EPC agency has also been directed to install signs, barricades, blinkers and delineators to guide motorists.
The restrictions will be reviewed periodically based on traffic data and field assessments, with the government to decide whether they should continue, be modified or withdrawn.
