SANGUEM
Residents of Costi-Kalay in Sanguem staged a protest against a piggery farm, demanding immediate action over alleged pollution and foul odour from the unit. A large number of villagers, including women, participated in the agitation and warned that the administration would be held responsible for any untoward incident if the issue remained unresolved before Ganesh Chaturthi.
Following the protest, Sanguem Mamlatdar Viraj Malkarnekar and Curchorem Police officials visited the village to assess the situation. Malkarnekar met the protesters and assured them that a detailed report would be submitted to the higher authorities.
Villagers alleged that waste from the piggery farm was being discharged into a nearby stream, contaminating water sources and affecting wells in the area. They claimed that despite repeated complaints, no effective action had been taken.
Residents also alleged that they had complained about the issue last year, following which the Goa State Pollution Control Board inspected the site, but no action was communicated.
Panch member Suraj Naik said permission was initially sought for a goat-rearing unit, but was later withdrawn after it was found to be a piggery farm. However, the owner obtained a stay order from the Directorate of Panchayats against the Panchayat’s decision.
