Councillor Lavina D’Souza on Thursday morning joined hands with the ruling panel of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), taking the strength of the panel to 14 in the 25-member council.
Sources in the MMC told The Goan that the move to rope in D’Souza was a determined effort by the ruling panel amid rumours that the ruling group of councillors would be thrown out of power.
MMC Chairperson Bhavna Nanoskar on Thursday informed that there were a few more councillors from the opposition who had expressed willingness to join the ruling panel.
“We are very happy that with every passing day, we are being appreciated for our work and we have received a great response from residents for our efforts towards development.”
“We have put in a lot of hard work and managed the Saptah and Ganesh festivals in a good manner. We are a people’s council focussing on development and we are a united panel. We want to work in unity and we are delighted to add a new councillor to our panel, which has strengthened us all the more,” said Nanoskar.
“Our panel had won election to the chairperson’s post by merely one vote and there were speculations that the panel would not be together. But today, our strength has increased and there are a few more councillors willing to join us. We will welcome any councillor who wants to join us in our efforts to take up development projects in Vasco,” Nanoskar added.
It may be recalled that former MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik had tendered his resignation as chairperson on July 11 citing personal reasons and maintained that he was not under any pressure.
However, he later withdrew his resignation on July 18 claiming he had done so at the request of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and both MLAs from Mormugao and Vasco, Carlos Almeida and Milind Naik.
However in a fresh twist, Naik on July 19 again re-tendered his resignation, forcing election to the post of the chairperson on August 2. Bhavna Nanoskar was elected as a Chairperson beating Fredrick Henriques in a close margin of one vote. While 13 Councillors had voted for Nanoskar, Henriques had received 12 votes.
