Tuesday night’s Sonsodo incident had its echo in the ruling BJP-ruled Margao Municipal Council with BJP Councillor and Chairperson of the Garbage Committee Camilo Barretto demanding that the civic chief Damu Shirodkar step down from office if he cannot manage the civic affairs.
Camilo directed his ire at the MMC Chairperson after he questioned Damu’s absence at Sonsodo on Tuesday night as well as on Wednesday morning. “Damu is the Chairperson of the Margao Municipal Council. His presence was required at Sonsodo last night when tension had rent the air after the leachate from the site had resulted in accidents. If Damu cannot handle the affairs of the civic body, he should step down from office. The Chairperson will soon be completing 15 months in office. Leaders of the BJP from Margao and Fatorda should find a replacement for the MMC Chairperson”, Camilo said.
Expressing concern over the flow of leachate from Sonsodo on the main road, causing accidents, Camilo said such things should not happen again since it poses risks of accidents for the motorists travelling on the Margao-Curtorim road.
