The special meeting of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Friday ended in confusion after councillors walked out in protest, saying their questions about the upcoming Formula 4 event in the port town had not been answered.
With the walkout, the meeting lost its quorum and MMC Chairperson Girish Borker had to adjourn the session. Following the disruption, Borker asked municipal staff to stop all ongoing work related to the event at Bogda-Sada until further notice.
Bogda Ward Councillor Prajay Mayekar led the protest, saying the event was causing problems for residents.
Other councillors agreed, saying neither the government nor the event organisers had informed locals or the municipal body before beginning preparations.
Speaking later to reporters, MMC Chairperson Girish Borker admitted that the council itself had not been officially told about the event details.
“Before the meeting began, councillors raised the Formula 4 issue and walked out, forcing us to adjourn due to lack of quorum. People in Mormugao are unaware of the event details, and this issue has been growing for weeks. As Chairperson, I feel we should have been informed,” said Borker.
He added that the event organisers should have briefed local authorities in advance to avoid confusion. “If the organisers had met with the Deputy Collector, MMC, and other authorities to explain the track layout, safety measures, and event duration, the situation would not have reached this point,” he said.
Borker said MMC staff had been told to visit Sada and stop all ongoing works linked to the race preparations.
