A Panaji court extended by a day the police custody remand of Paresh Sawardekar, the allegedly drunk driver of the Mercedes-Benz SUV which mowed down multiple vehicles killing three and injuring several others at the Banastarim bridge more than a week ago.
Sawardekar was produced before the court on Monday morning as his earlier five-day police remand was expiring.
Simultaneously, the Transport Department has also initiated proceedings against Paresh to cancel his driving licence.
RTO sources said, a show-cause notice has been issued to Sawardekar with regard to revoking his driving licence as prescribed by the law.
The department had also earlier initiated similar licence revocation proceedings against his wife Meghna, who owns the Mercedes-Benz SUV. The vehicle has a record of being issued challans for ‘over-speeding’ on at least four occasions in the last 10 months, all of which have been unpaid.
Meanwhile, the Sawardekar couple had moved court with separate pleas for bail, which are fixed for hearing on Wednesday.
Tragedy had struck on Sunday (August 6) when the Sawardekar-driven Mercedes-Benz SUV rammed into two motorcycles and another four-wheeler killing three people -- the Fadte couple from Divar and 27-year-old Anup Karmakar -- and seriously injuring three others, triggering state-wide outrage.
The Sawardekar couple, who also had their minor children in the car at the time of the accident, were allegedly inebriated. Paresh, according to the police, has tested to have alcohol content in his blood stream which is three times the permissible levels.
