The High Court order setting aside the recent ward reservations to the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) elections has changed the situation of candidates aspiring to contest the upcoming civic polls at the council.
Many aspirants had prepared to file their nomination on Monday but backed off after news of the High Court setting aside the recent reservations for 5 civic bodies, including MMC, began to spread in the morning.
Incidentally, one aspiring candidate, Vishal Naik, arrived at the Dy Collector’s office on Monday morning with a strong force of about 200 supporters to file his nomination.
His nomination was not accepted by the Dy Collector on grounds that nominations of candidates could not be accepted till a clear picture emerged considering the High Court’s intervention on the petition against ward reservations.
Mormugao Dy Collector Sachin Desai said the State Election Commission had issued an order stating that the election process in the MMC had been kept in abeyance until further orders.
"We will restart the process only after we receive the next order and we will act as per the order. What is to be done with nominations that have already been filed will be clear only after further orders in this process and until then, we cannot do anything," said Desai.
