Covid bio-medical waste at Sonsodo disinfected: MMC

Margao Municipal Chairperson Lyndon Pereira on Thursday explained that the Covid bio-medical waste stored in the land-fill site at Sonsodo since last year had been disinfected with sodium hypochlorite.

The civic chief, who was at Sonsodo on Thursday to verify the situation, was told by Margao Sanitary Inspector Viraj Arabekar that the stored had been disinfected before it is cleared by the government appointed contractor.

The sanitary inspector further explained that the Covid bio-medical waste had been stored since last year and was not mixed with bio-degradable waste. “Goa Waste Management Corporation MD Levinson Martins has also pointed out that the waste should be disinfected with sodium hypochlorite, which has been done by the civic body”, he said.

To a question, the MMC chief pointed out that bio medical waste did not got mixed with the daily waste disposed of at Sonsodo since the former has been stored in the land fill site.

The MMC sanitary inspector maintained that MMC workers collecting the Covid bio medical waste from the households of patients were briefed last year to disinfect the bio-medical waste before it is carried to the land fill site. “The Covid bio-medical waste stored at the landfill site is disinfected at the time of storage”, Arabekar said.

Meanwhile, Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said the civic body has contacted the contractor roped in by the district administration to handle the bio-medical waste for disposal of the waste stored at the Sonsodo land fill site.
