While Covid cases have been on a steady decline, dengue has now raised concerns in the port town as some wards have reported cases of the disease.
The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has been quick to take stock of the situation and has decided to initiate precautionary measures in the municipality.
MMC Chairperson Damodar Kaskar told reporters that he had already decided to take up the issue of dengue with Chief Officer Jayant Tari and will also convene a meeting with health officials.
"We have also requested the chief officer to purchase the insecticide required for fumigation and to hand them over to all councillors for fumigation in their wards.
“We will carry out fumigation in all wards of the municipality. We will provide councillors with a fogging machine, insecticide and even fuel required for fogging. We will also convene a meeting with the health department to see what best we can do to prevent dengue cases in our municipality," said Kaskar.
Councillor Yatin Kamurlekar said there had been growing dengue cases in his Ward 20.
"As cases of Covid are declining, we are now facing the threat of dengue, especially in my ward. We have already identified four cases of suspected dengue and we immediately contacted Health Officer Dr Rashmi Khandeparkar, who along with her staff carried out awareness in houses and even identified potential dengue mosquito breeding sites.”
“It was shocking to notice that almost every second house had dengue breeding sites. We already conducted an awareness drive on Tuesday and already fumigated some areas.”
“We will now carry out a full fumigation drive with the help of four fogging machines and cover the entire area. We have also requested the chairperson to provide every councillor with 5 litres of insecticide required for fumigation and he has assured to procure it for us," said Kamurlekar.
Dengue cases detected in Chimbel
OLD GOA: Four cases of dengue were detected from a single locality in Chimbel, giving additional headache to health authorities who are already waging a battle against the Covid pandemic.
A health worker at the Chimbel Primary Health Centre told The Goan that the four cases were detected from Chinchwada-Chimbel, following which a PHC team led by Medical Officer Dr Jude D’Souza conducted a cleanliness-cum-awareness drive.
The team apprised residents on the need to keep their surroundings clean and not to allow stagnation of water, which leads to breeding of mosquitoes.
Special focus was laid on emptying containers where clean water was found stagnant, as the mosquitoes spreading dengue breed in clean water.
