With Covid cases on the rise in Canacona, two houses were declared micro-containment zones and four adjoining houses as buffer zones in Agas and Shellim areas of Loliem-Polem village on Saturday.
In an order issued by South Goa District Magistrate Ruchika Katyal, five people from a house in Agas-Maxem and an equal number in another house in Shellim have tested positive.
Accordingly, the two houses are declared as micro-containment zones, while two more houses each in the two areas are notified as buffer zones, to prevent its spread further in adjoining areas.
The district magistrate deployed a rapid response team consisting of Dy Collector, Dy SP (Quepem), Health Officer, CMC Chief Officer, Dy Director of Panchayats (Margao), Fire Station Officer, Mamlatdar, Inspector Civil Supplies, AE (PWD Roads) and AE (Electricity), with Canacona Mamlatdar Vimod Dalal appointed as Duty Magistrate.
According to sources, there are as many as 93 active cases in Canacona after 7 new cases were detected on Saturday and over 65 of these active cases are from Loliem-Polem village alone.
After Loliem-Polem village, Covid cases have also been reported in some areas in Canacona municipality, in Poinguinim, Agonda and Shrishthal villages.
Dy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes, who resides in Loliem-Polem village, has appealed to residents to strictly follow Covid protocols by frequently using hand sanitisers and face masks, while also practising social distancing in public spaces.
The number of recorded Covid cases in Canacona is now 3,548 and 3,433 of them have recovered.
