5,724 cases! That's a frightening number of Covid active cases in state's populous taluka - Salcete, with Margao accounting for little less than half of it.
If the number of Covid active cases in Margao has touched an alarming 2,454, cases under the Cansaulim Primary Health Centre is nearing a thousand, 963 cases to be precise.
The situation in the Primary health centre areas of Curtoirm and Loutolim is not anything better. A glance at the Health bulletin shows that cases in both these health centres has crossed the 500-figure mark, indicating the spread of the virus across the taluka.
The Balli Primary Health Centre, which has jurisdiction over the Cuncolim Municipal area and other villages of Salcete, is presently treating 487 cases, while neighbouring Chinchinim PHC has around 333 cases on record.
That the Covid cases are spreading like wildfire in Salcete is not just evident by the growing number of cases, but the deaths that have taken place in almost all the places, including Margao, Cuncolim, Colva, Fatorda, etc.
Take for instance the Margao Urban Health Centre. The number of cases as on Monday was pegged at 2,454 cases. On Sunday, the cases were put at 2,150, a spike of 304 cases. This explains why there’s so much load on the South Goa District Hospital, the ESI Hospital and the private hosptials in and around Margao as the existing bed capacity have proved grossly inadequate to house the patients.
There’s been a huge spike of cases within the jurisdiction of the Curtorim Primary Health Centre as well. The health bulletin on Monday showed a spike of 101 cases in the Curtorim PHC, as the total number of active Covid cases touched 533 on Monday.
Curtorim Health Officer Dr Vallabh Nadkarni said cases have been detected across the jurisdiction of the centre, right from Macazana to Davorlim.
Loutolim and Navelim PHCs also recorded a significant spike in cases in the past 24 hours. If the number of cases in Loutolim were put at 448 on Sunday, the cases jumped to 518 on Monday, a spoke of 70 cases. Similarly, the Navelim PHC also witnessed a spike of 61 cases in the last 24 hours.
Salcete coastal belt has also seen a spike in cases right from Cavelossim, Colva to Cansaulim. Active cases at the Cansaulim PHC were put at 963 on Monday as against 913 on Sunday, a spike of 50 cases.
