Belagavi police have initiated stringent action against heavy vehicles from Goa and other parts entering the city during the banned hours, as these vehicles have been involved in mishaps during office and school hours.

Entry of heavy vehicles is banned in the city from 7 am to 11 am and from 4 pm to 8 pm. However, heavy vehicles are entering the city in violation of this order.

Since Wednesday, the South Traffic Police have initiated a special drive against these vehicles stopping them near Macche on NH 748 and at Piranwadi on the Panaji-Chorla Road.

“Heavy vehicles coming from Khanapur and Goa are entering the city at a good speed. At the same time, vehicles coming from the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway are also entering the city via Chennamma Circle,” a senior police officer said.

“While some children have been killed or injured in accidents due to such heavy vehicles in the past, there was a rising demand that heavy vehicles should be banned from entering the city during school hours and office hours.”

With this punitive action being taken, South Traffic Police teams were seen stopping these vehicles at various places and this has eased traffic inside the city during the rush hours.
