With mounting pressure from the families of the victims of the Banastarim accident, supported by Cumbarjua MLA Rajesh Faldesai, the Goa government decided to transfer the investigation to the Crime Branch (CB).
In an order issued by Inspector General of Police Omvir Singh late on Thursday night, the case has been officially transferred from the Mardol police to the Crime Branch for a thorough investigation.
CB Superintendent Nidhin Valsan confirmed this development stating they will carry the investigation forward.
On Wednesday, a large number of residents from Divar, along with activists, politicians, and others, took part in a candlelight march in Old Goa during which they demanded the case be handed over to the CB as they have lost confidence in the Mardol police.
MLA Faldesai, who met Chief Minister Pramod Sawant along with a delegation earlier in the week, pressed for the case to be transferred to the CB and emphasized the necessity for a judicial inquiry into the matter. Subsequently, Faldesai told the media that the CM had assured to transfer the case to the CB by Thursday.
