Concerns raised as revellers ignore warnings
VALPOI
Just four days ago, a young man tragically drowned in the river behind the Bhironda Panchayat building. Following the incident, locals had demanded the installation of warning signboards at the site. However, despite the recent tragedy, a large number of people were seen gathering at the same spot on Sunday to bathe in the river, raising fresh concerns among residents.
Locals have expressed strong displeasure, noting that even after such a fatal incident, people continue to behave recklessly, engaging in unsafe activities in the river without fear. Sarpanch Udaysingh Rane also voiced concern over the situation and said that a letter has been sent to the police requesting the deployment of personnel at the site.
Due to the intense heat in recent days, large crowds have been flocking to rivers across Sattari taluka for bathing. Over the past two months, multiple drowning incidents have been reported in various rivers in the taluka. A few days ago, another youth from Panaji also drowned at the same Bhironda river stretch, sparking widespread grief and concern.
Additionally, incidents of people consuming alcohol and creating a nuisance in the river have been increasing, contributing to accidents and tarnishing the image of Sattari taluka. In response, locals demanded the installation of warning boards, increased police presence, and deployment of lifeguards in coordination with concerned government departments. Accordingly, the panchayat installed warning signboards two days ago, urging people to avoid entering deep waters.
Despite these measures, a large crowd gathered again on Sunday. Many youngsters from different parts of Goa visited the spot for bathing, and instances of alcohol consumption and unruly behaviour were also observed. The fact that such negligence continues even after a recent fatal incident has drawn sharp criticism from locals.
The rivers in Sattari taluka are known for being clean and unpolluted, attracting visitors especially during summer.
