The Cuncolim Municipal Council on Wednesday gave its stamp of approval for an action plan to take solid waste management to its logical conclusion.
At the council meeting chaired by chairperson Angela Luis Painginkar, the council approved the plan of action, including toning up door-to-door waste collection, implementing Open Defecation Free scheme in the town, keeping the roadsides free from waste and tackling black spots in the town.
While the Action plan will be forwarded to the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) for necessary action, the civic body has sought permission from the government to engage additional labourers for solid waste management work.
It has also been decided to erect a shed at the solid waste management plant near the Cuncolim Industrial Estate.
The meeting also deliberated at length on the development works amounting to Rs 3.60 crore sanctioned for Cuncolim, with the City Fathers demanding that the civic body expedite the execution of the development works as the current term of the civic body is due to end next year.
The meeting also discussed on the complaints from traders about the huge delays taken by the civic body to issue trade licenses and to also effect transfer of house tax.
After much deliberation, it was agreed upon by the elected representatives that since the time-frame for delivery of services is listed on the Citizens Charter, the civic administration should adhere to the schedule as far as possible.
On the pre-monsoon works, the City Fathers were informed that an amount of Rs 6.40 lakh will be spent on the pre-monsoon works across the town, with the Councilors demanding early execution of the works with monsoon round the corner.
Meanwhile, today’s council meeting was conducted by the chairperson in the absence of the Chief Officer, who could not make it for the meeting on health grounds. Chairperson Angela went ahead with the meeting in the absence of the Chief Officer after seeking advice from the office of Director of Municipal Administration, sources added.
